This is the first of a three ro/ro series
built by Smith’s Dock of Middlesbrough, England. The first two vessels,
respectively named “Cicero” and “Cavallo”, were built for Ellerman Wilson Line,
an English company engaged in Great Britain – Scandinavia traffic in
cooperation with Fred. Olsen; the third sister, the “Jacqueline”, was delivered
some years after the first pair, in 1983, being nowadays already scrapped; this
happened at Alang in 2004, after nine years of lay-up at Rio de Janeiro. Even
if I don’t know many particulars about Jacqueline’s history, nor I know many
things about our “Cavallo”; anyway I suppose that she
should have been in Canadian service for some years before her purchase by
Oceanex, happened in 1994. For the Canadian company she was engaged between
Montreal and St. John’s, at Newfoundland, mainly carrying containers which were
loaded by crane on her weather deck; it is curious to notice that her sister
“Cavallo” was lenghtened by about 25 metres in 1996, while the same work was
not carried on the “Cicero”. Sold in December 2006 to Aegean Cargo, she left
Montreal for Greece on 2006 Christmas Day, arriving at Piraeus on 6th
January 2007, for the Epiphany; after being repainted in Aegean Cargo’s
colours, being also the first vessel to carry the new Aegean Cargo logo on her
funnels, she started sailing between France and Morocco on charter, serving the
Moroccan operator IMTC for more than three years. At the end of the charter she
came back to Greece, where she remained laid up until her sale for scrap, on
July 2014.
