One of the first Belgian car-ferries,
was delivered in 1958 to Belgian State-owned R.M.T. from Hoboken-based
Cockerill yards to serve Oostende – Dover route. After sixteen years of
service, the ferry was laid up and then sold in 1976 to Agapitos Brothers. For
the Greek company served on various Aegean routes, but mainly from Piraeus to
Ikaria and Samos via Cyclades; when she was transferred to Agapitos Express
Ferries, in 1992, was already sailing on Piraeus – Paros – Naxos – Ios – Santorini line since 1989, and remained on that line
also until the end of 1993. In 1994 she passed the age-limit for serving Greek
domestic ferry services, so she was took out of service; anyway, even if I’ve
no evidence of her being employed on a route in 1994, I clearly remember to
have seen a timetable of her for Piraeus – Paros – Naxos – Heraklia
line. Later in 1995 works started at Neo
Molo of Drapetsona to convert her to a one-day cruise
ship, being the age-limit not applied to cruise vessels, and the plans were to
use her on Heraklion – Santorini line under the name “Kallisti”;
this however didn’t materialize when the ship caught fire during refit works,
on February 16th, 1996. Being towed away from the quay, the ship
later capsized, it seems due to a wrong manoeuvre by the tug. A worker of the
shipyard was missed in the fire.
