At the beginning of Seventies, Greek shipyards built a considerable
number of medium-sized vessels, mainly ordered by local companies to be deployed
on domestic routes. This is also the case of the “Georgios”,
which was ordered from Fragoudakis company (later
known as “Fragline”) to Bekris
yards of Perama: the ferry was delivered to the owner
on August 5th, 1971, when she was inaugurated in Piraeus. The “Georgios” soon started her sailings to Syros, Agios Kirikos, Karlovassi and Vathi, leaving
Piraeus for four round-trips each week, being the first modern car ferry to
call at Ikaria and Samos islands, and being the first Greek ferry equipped by
airplane-type seats and Self Service restaurant. Being myself not a lover of
self-service restaurants, and being annoyed by the large number of seats,
preferred to cabin places, on ferries, I wouldn’t have been proud of this primacy,
but that’s it! After only few months on Samos – Ikaria routes, on November 1971
was transferred to Patras – Igoumenitsa
– Corfu – Brindisi line, where she remained until the
end of 1984, sailing from 1981 onwards with the “Eolos”
as fleet mate. In 1985 Fragline accepted the offer
from COSCO which intended to purchase the ferry, so the “Georgios”
left Greece only 14 years after her launch, staying since 1985 in Chinese waters
and changing three names, even if remaining in COSCO ownership.
