The “Naxos” was built in Greece in 1975, during a period when Greek shipyards were very busy, to the account of a locally-based company, the Naxos Shipping Company, focused on Piraeus  - Syros – Paros – Naxos services. Her maiden voyage was very troubled, hitting the Port Authority quay at Syros; being awaited at Naxos for her inauguration, was repaired at Neorion shipyard in a record time and allowed to continue her trip; in Naxos anyway, during the manoeuvre, she collided again with two boats. Even if often the local-based companies, as happened with this one, fell due to economic troubles, the ships of these companies were widely loved by the local population, and the “Naxos” herself was also the subject of a song by the Greek musician Irini Kounitopoulou, “To Naξιωτικο Kapabh” (“To Naxiotiko Karavi”, Naxos’s ship), a song which, many years after her disappearance from Greek waters, is still sung at local parties; the orange colour chosen for her hull is still associated with her, also because it isn’t common on ferries. Mainly operating on morning departures from Piraeus to Cyclades, on December 16th, 1983 was involved in the evacuation of Palestinian refugees from Beirut, and the Palestinians also raised their flag on “Naxos” ’s mast. In 1985 the ship was transferred to Elleniki Aktoploia, a State-owned company which operated the ferries of local companies which had financial troubles, but as long as Elleniki Aktoploia hadn’t a corporate livery, she maintained her distinctive orange until her purchase by Arkadia Lines, happened in 1990. Under Arkadia colours she remained on her service to Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini, occasionally sailing also to Amorgos, Astypalea, Syros but not to Heraklion. In 1994 the plans of the company were to use her from Rafina to Cyclades, but was sold to Chinese interests and renamed “Libao”; she seems to be still in service.
