Line |
Delivered as the “European Gateway” in
1975 to Townsend Thoresen, was lenghtened
in 1980 at Amsterdam Dry Dock. On December, 1982, collided with the “Speedlink Vanguard” and was holed by her bulbous bow,
sinking and causing six deaths, remaining layed on
her starboard side in shallow waters. Even if she was declared a total
constructive loss, was bought by Anco Ferries,
rebuilt at Perama yards and finally introduced on Anco Ferries’s routes until
their bankruptcy, in 1988. Bought from GT Link and refitted to be suitable to
their traffic, was later sold to Europa Linien in
1992 as the “Rostock Link”, then in 1996 to Scandlines,
and on January 2000 she was bought by Agoudimos Lines
just after six months of charter to Mols Linien. Renamed “Penelope A” for her first
Greek period, spend under Bahamas flag, in 2005 was transferred to Greek flag,
being registered in Piraeus, because Agoudimos Lines
had gained a subsidied service from Thessaloniki to
Samos and Dodecanese, leaving Thessalia on Mondays to
Samos, Kos, Rhodes and from Rhodes to Chalki,
Karpathos, Kassos and Heraklion; back in Thessaloniki
on Friday, she did a non-subsidied trip to Cyclades
and Heraklion. Later her North Aegean service moved to Kavala as the main port,
serving Mytilene, Chios, Samos, Ikaria and sailing once a week to Thessaloniki;
in 2008 the subsidy for this line was granted to Saos
Ferries, so Agoudimos rerouted the
“Penelope” to Brindisi – Corfu
– Igoumenitsa line, replacing the “Ionian
Sky” which was moved to Bari. On August 27th, 2008, the ferry
had a problem with her ramp, being forced to remain moored at Igoumenitsa, with her 387 passengers sent to the ferry
sailing to Bari. After a spell in Bari replacing the “Ionian Sky”,
she operated out of Brindisi for 2009 and 2010, being
employed that year also in the July – August link to Zakynthos, a very
strange service which reaches the Southern Ionian island (excepting Kythira and
Antikythira) but not Patras.
From December 2010 till April 2011 was chartered to Nel
Lines, operating from Kavala and Thessaloniki to Limnos, Lesvos, Chios, Samos
and Ikaria, the same route she was engaged on with her company’s colours in 2006 and 2007. After the charter was laid up
until October 2011, also due to the problems which are afflicting the company,
preventing her also to sail on Summer; was then reflagged to Cyprus and
chartered to Marfamar for a Tunisia – Libya
service. Back from the charter after a month, was laid up until her sale for
scrap, on July 2013.
