Already part of Aegean Speed Lines fleet
for two years before the name change from “Speedrunner
1” to “Speedrunner I”, she continued also in 2007
season to link Piraeus to Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos, Folegandros and Milos; her previous fifteen years of career
out of the Aegean were mainly spent around Britain, Ireland and France after
the award of the Blue Riband for the Eastbound Atlantic crossing completed
during her delivery voyage from Australia via New York. For 2008 season the
ferry was moved to the other trunk of service, from Piraeus to Paros, Naxos, Ios and Santorini; anyway after the purchase of two other
ferries from Seacontainers group the company suddenly
sold also the present ferry, which was bought by Panagiotakis
shopowner, also involved with Alpha Ferries. The ship
finally gained the Greek flag, after three years under the Red Ensign, was
renamed “Sea Runner” and deployed on daily services leaving Crete (Heraklion or
Rethymnon) for Santorini, Mykonos and Folegandros. After two years of service anyway, due to
financial difficulties of her shipowner and some problems to two of her four
Ruxton engines, the ferry remained moored at Keratsini.
In 2011 the ferry was bought by Sea Jets, which renamed the ferry as the
“Cosmos Jet” and started carrying repairs which lasted until the middle of
July; the remaining part of her Summer was spent sailing to Santorini from the
three minor Cretan ports, Chania, Rethymnon and Agios Nikolaos. At the end of September
the “Cosmos Jet” had another breakdown and was towed to Piraeus area, where she
was initially moored at Keratsini, before being moved
to Perama. Even if she was announced back in service
for 2012, she didn’t left Perama,
having not solved her engine troubles, and later was laid up at Avlis Shipyards of Chalkis. Actually it seems very difficult that she would be back in
service, a great pity, if we consider that we’re speaking of a legendary ferry,
but after 25 years she seems to be very “tired”.
