Aegean Speed Lines was established in 2005 by the
Greek Eugenides Group and the English Seacontainers. This athypical
society introduces in Greece
the first foreign vessel serving domestic routes, flying a red flag with the
Union Jack on the upper left corner, the jack which flies on every vessel
registered in United Kingdom’s
ports. The “English” engaged on this service is the “Speedrunner
1”, a
fantasy-less name for an Incat catamaran which
started from summer 2005 to link Piraeus with Western Cyclades and Paros. On
summer 2006 the call at Paros was quitted; the
company livery anyway changed from white with light blue and green marks plus
an horse profile, to a grey-blue hull, white superstructure and intense blue
funnel. Finally, the 2007 season, views another port of call: the island of Folegandros is the fourth one served after
Serifos, Sifnos and Milos. The good results of the company led Aegean Speed
Lines to add another ferry to its services, the “Speedrunner
II”, which started serving Paros, Naxos, Ios and
Santorini on 2007 Summer; in the meantime the “Speedrunner
1” was
renamed “Speedrunner I”. In 2008 the “Speedrunner I” was sold; in the meantime anyway the company
bought two former fleet mates of the “Speedrunner II”
from Seacontainers, the “Superseacat
Three” and the “Superseacat Four”, which were
operating an express service between Finland and Estonia. The surprising fact
anyway is that the company decided to leave the vessels in Baltic Sea trade,
linking Helsinki and Tallinn and being, after
Superfast Ferries, the second Greek company to operate in Baltic Sea and the
fourth working out of Greece after Anek Lines, Minoan
Lines and Superfast Ferries. The Helsinki – Tallinn line anyway lasted only a
Summer and in 2009 the two former Seacat vessels were
brought to Greece under the new names “Speedrunner
III” and “Speedrunner IV”, maintaining the link to
the central Cyclades, Ios and Santorini and opening a
new link from Piraeus to Syros, Tinos and Mykonos. Some rumours indicated for
2010 the intention of the company to sell the “Speedrunner
II” replacing her with a conventional vessel, but this didn’t realized and the
fleet remained unchanged in both vessels and services also for 2010. In 2009
the company was awarded by Lloyd’s List as the “Greek Passenger line of the
year”. On 2011 the Piraeus – Ios – Santorini line was
dropped in favour of the Heraklion – Santorini line, even if this new link
seems to be advertised only by a Cretan office and not directly by the company.
The economic downturn which affected Greece these years forced the company to
reduce hard its services, maintaining only the classic line to Serifos, Sifnos, Folegandros and Milos for 2012 and 2013 seasons, respectively
played by the “Speedrunner IV” and the “Speedrunner III”; in 2014 anyway, the “Speedrunner
IV” resumed the services to Paros and Naxos, leaving the “Speedrunner
II” as the only laid-up vessel.
