The “Sansovino” is the second one of three near sisters built at Fincantieri yards of Palermo and Ancona between the end of 80’s and the beginning of 90’s for Adriatica di Navigazione of Italy. Specially designed to operate on Jugoslavia routes, the ferry was then employed almost everywhere on Adriatica services: Greece, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro sailing both from Ancona and Bari ports. After the massive reduction of Adriatica services the ferry became redundant, so she was due to charter market: the first time to Siremar, then on June 2004, to Adria Ferries. This time the “Sansovino” represented an enormous paradox which should be at least embarassing for the Adriatica management of that time: an Adriatica ferry, full chartered to the former Adriatica port agent, being employed on a route abandoned because of unprofitability, became incredibly profitable in the hands of a private operator. At the end of the charter, the vessel was back to Adriatica, which was absorbed by Tirrenia, then transferred to Tirrenia’s subsidiary Siremar, without being renamed. After three years spent between service periods and frequent lay-ups, the ferry was sold to the Greek Shipowner Gourdomichalis, which deployed the ferry between Italy (Bari) and Albania (Durres) as the “Santa Maria I”. Having been laid up for a big period, in 2010 was sold and renamed “Adriatica King” for a new company, Albanian Ferries, and since 2014 is back in the hands of Siremar, again with “Sansovino” name.
